Perth and Kinross TRAVELTAPE
Welcome to the TRAVELTAPE
audio guide to PERTH and KINROSS. This is the fourth title in a series planned to cover
Scotland.
TRAVELTAPE is designed to be listened to before or
during any visit to this scenic and historic county.
Where do you begin to describe the many wonders of Perth and Kinross? The superlatives
seem endless. It certainly is the heart of Scotland, both geographically and historically,
and possesses the most varied landscape in the country.
Perthshire boasts the worlds most famous salmon fishing river - the Tay, fed by
rivers such as the Ericht, Isla, Garry, Tilt, Tummel, Lyon, Earn and Almond, making it the
largest in Britain carrying more water than the Thames and Severn combined. Perth and
Kinross contains much of Scotlands richest farmland, with the rolling hills leading
to magnificent glens - Glenshee is one of the largest ski areas in Britain and features
the countrys highest main road which climbs to over two thousand feet.
The county of Perth originally extended south and westwards to Dunblane and
Callander and then up to Crainlarich and even Tyndrum, but was much reduced by local
government reorganisation in 1974.
The Perth and Kinross we discover in this TRAVELTAPE,
however, is fascinating and rich in history, from the Coronations at Scone to the first
sparks of the Reformation. The city of Perth submitted to Cromwells occupation and
the Jacobite risings, and was the site of famous battles, and even the murder of a
monarch.
Perthshire is packed with interesting towns and villages, castles and palaces,
cathedrals and churches, wildlife and nature, history and legend and this TRAVELTAPE audio guide is sponsored by quality local businesses
throughout the county.
