Highland Perthshire TRAVEL
TAPE
Welcome to the TRAVELTAPE
audio guide to HIGHLAND PERTHSHIRE: this is the third title in a series planned to cover
Scotland. TRAVELTAPE is designed to be listened to before
or during any visit to this vast, scenic and historic county. It will help you to enjoy
the secrets and folklore of its rich past, visit some out-of-the-way magical places, and
really get to know this fairest portion of the Northern Kingdomas it was
labelled by Sir Walter Scott.
The Highland Perthshire we discover in this TRAVELTAPE,
however, is enormous, taking in the ancient districts of Strathtay, Strathtummel,
Breadalbane and Atholl.
The great Perthshire landowning families were Murray, Stewart, Campbell, Robertson,
Drummond and Menzies, whose ancient lands were transformed with the building of fairy-tale
castles, and they remodelled the landscape with vast plantings of forestry, which created
the wonderful scenery of Highland Perthshire which is world - renowned.
The mighty river Tay flows through the county, it flows a total of 119 miles from the
sea to Loch Tay to the sea, and is the longest river in Scotland, and one of the
countrys premier salmon rivers. Vast sporting estates grew in the Victorian era, and
offer some of the finest field sports in Europe, with trout and salmon fishing, deer stalking
and grouse shooting, attracting guns and rods from all over the world. The famous MacNab,
in which the sportsman catches a salmon, bags a brace of grouse and stalks a stag, all in
the same day, is still possible here in Highland Perthshire.
Famous lochs, like Tummel, Rannoch and Tay are linked by mountain passes to glens such
as the longest and probably the prettiest in Scotland: Glen Lyon. The glens of Garry and
Tilt compete for wild grandeur, whilst the gentler straths of Tummel and Tay all delight
the eye, with the high mountain peaks of Schiehallion, and Lawers dominating the skyline,
rising above the deeply wooded lower slopes and glens. This is BIG TREE country with the
oldest tree and largest yew in Europe, at Fortingall, the tallest tree at the Hermitage,
Dunkeld, the widest tree at Cluny, near Aberfeldy and the fastest growing stand of trees
in Britain at Dalguise; all are featured in this TRAVELTAPE
audio guide, which is sponsored by quality local businesses throughout the county. Such
sponsors are hand selected and represent the very best retailers, galleries, hotels, pubs,
restaurants and visitor attractions, in some of the most superb locations.
