The East of
Scotland TRAVELTAPE
This east off Scotland title essentially covers the capital city of Edinburgh
and the three counties of the Lothians, it also incorporates and starts a little further
east in Falkirk.
The very essence of our nation's history is embodied here. Great events and characters
are seen to dominate the palaces, castles, and communities we visit.
This area has been the seat of power since the very earliest days. From the ancient
settlement at Traprain Law; capital of the ancient kingdom of Voltadini, which later moved
to the Castle Rock and in time led to the establishment of Edinburgh Castle.
The resulting old town remains one of the best-preserved medieval townscapes in Europe,
its narrow streets and winds home to a myriad of strange stories and tales.
The new town built in the Age of Enlightenment, is a splendid example of the
architectural magnificence of that period.
The rich rolling farmland of the Lothians gently falls away from the Border hills to
the sandy coastline, dotted with numerous golf courses, again there has been played here
for some 500 years or so.
